ridden guests in your home
Research shows that the way you organise your environment plays a big part in your wellbeing reduce the risk of bacteria and contaminants making their way into your home by following these simple steps:
Find a new home for your toothbrush
The bathroom sink is possibly the worst place to store your toothbrush. Actually, it's not really the sink itself that's the problem, it's the fact that it's so friendly with the germridden toilet. According to germ expert Chuck Gerba, a professor of environmental microbiology from the University of Arizona, there are 3.2 million microbes per square inch in the average toilet bowl. With the push of a button, this bacteria is propelled as far as 1.8 meters, finding a new home on the floor, on the sink, and on your toothbrush. ''Unless you like rinsing with toilet water, keep you toothbrush behind closed doors,'' advises Gerba.
Stop toting germs
Women's handbags are a breeding ground for bacteria, so think twice next time you put your purse on the kitchen counter. Think about it, handbags thoughtlessly get parked in some very germfriendly spots, like under tables in restaurants, hollister femmes, on the floor of the bus or train, and even on the floor in public toilets. In fact, Gerba and his team's research showed that a third of the handbags tested were positive for faecal bacteria and that the bottom of bags housed up to 4000 bacteria per square centimeter. Gerba's advice? Take your bag off the bench and store it in a drawer or on a chair anywhere except where food is prepared.
Leave your shoes at the door
Placing a big pot of leftovers straight into the fridge is a recipe for food poisoning, says O Peter Snyder Jr, president of the Hospitality Institute of Technology and Management in St Paul, Minnesota in the US. Why? Because it can take a long time for the temperature of food in the middle of the container to drop, creating the perfect environment for bacteria.
