Transvestite doused in petrol and set on fire over missing Louis Vuitton handbag, hollister france
A transvestite suffered 'horrendous' lifethreatening burns after being drenched in petrol and set alight following a row over a missing handbag, a jury heard today.
Birmingham Crown Court was told that Ricardo da Silva was attacked at his flat in the city last December after property belonging to two of his friends, including the Louis Vuitton handbag, could not be found.
Prosecutor Peter GrievesSmith alleged the 'premeditated' attack was planned by Brazilian nationals, Gabryela Passos, 29, and her 22yearold friend, Raphael Modesto.
Horrific: Birmingham Crown Court was told that Ricardo da Silva suffered 'horrendous' burns after being doused in petrol and set on fire
The jury was told that Passos had set the victim alight after decanting 3 worth of petrol into a bucket, while Modesto had been a party to the attack.
The court heard that Mr da Silva, 25, suffered burns to 70 per cent of his body after the defendants travelled from their homes in London to his fourthfloor flat in Birmingham.
Mr GrievesSmith said Mr da Silva, who is also Brazilian, regarded the defendants as friends and had previously allowed them to stay at his flat and to leave behind the handbag, a computer and other property, which he then claimed had been stolen in a burglary.
Following the attack, the prosecutor said, Mr da Silva made fruitless attempts to douse the flames in his shower before banging on neighbours' doors and screaming for help while he was still on fire.
The victim who was initially given less than a 50 per cent chance of survival then spent more than three months in hospital, undergoing 16 operations in just five weeks.
